What does the new European regulation on veterinary medicinal products change?

The new European regulation on veterinary pharmaceuticals came into force on 28 January 2022. The Director of the French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV), Jean-Pierre Orand, assesses what will change.

Phytotherapy and aromatherapy: adapting risk assessment in veterinary medicine

Herbal preparations (phytotherapy) and essential oils (aromatherapy) are increasingly being used as alternatives to other “allopathic” medicinal products for the treatment of animals. This is true even for food-producing animals. If the products used have a therapeutic purpose, they are considered veterinary medicinal products.This means it should be possible to guarantee there is no risk to consumers of foods derived from treated animals. However, it is complicated to implement the current regulations to assess this risk for herbal medicinal products. ANSES therefore issued an internal request to propose a specific assessment methodology for herbal veterinary medicinal products.

Antimicrobial resistance in animals: what major conclusions can be drawn for 2020?

European Antibiotic Awareness Day is taking place on 18 November 2021. For this occasion, ANSES is publishing the results of several monitoring programmes that it carries out to prevent the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in farm and domestic animals in France. Below is a review of some key findings with Jean-Yves Madec, Scientific Director for antimicrobial resistance and Head of the French surveillance network for antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria of animal origin (RESAPATH), Gérard Moulin, Deputy Director of the French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV), and Agnès Perrin-Guyomard, Deputy Head of the National Reference Laboratory for antimicrobial resistance.

Through its French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products, ANSES will be taking part in the management of a project seeking solutions to the unavailability of certain antibiotics. This three-year project will begin in November 2020, and will receive technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO).
